Hit the road for a short day trip (7.16.22) to the fabulous Menil Collection in Houston! The occasion? A once-in-a-lifetime retrospective exhibition on the Surrealist artist Meret Oppenheim. This long overdue major retrospective has two additional reasons for attending: Given the Menil’s incredible Surrealist collection, it’s the perfect context for this show, and Oppenheim’s art benefits from in-person viewing, especially the sculptural work. Check out this exhibition video to glimpse her breadth of work.

Trip Includes:

  • 1.5 hour live Zoom lecture on artist Meret Oppenheim on Thursday, July 14, 2022, 12:00 pm-1:30 pm (central) to prep us for the exhibition. Recording of this lecture will be available online to participants by 10 am the next day, Friday, July 15th.

  • Optional dinner meetup Friday, July 15, 2022 at 6:30 pm at Niko Niko’s Greek & American Cafe (2520 Montrose Blvd., Houston TX 77006) for those who want to join the night before. (Dinner cost not included.)

  • Guided visit to “Meret Oppenheim: My Exhibition” retrospective at the Menil on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 11 am, right when they open. In accordance with the museum's rules, this probably won’t be a traditional group tour. Instead, the instructor will be hovering :) and providing fun (and less conventional!) guidance for viewing the exhibition as well as other exhibition-related artwork located elsewhere in the Menil Collection.

  • Casual, post-exhibition discussion over a late lunch, likely at the Menil Collection cafe around 1 pm on Saturday, July 16, 2022. (Lunch cost not included.)

Important Notes

  • Participants are responsible for making their own travel arrangements.

  • Menil Collection admission is free, but tickets are required. Instructor has pre-reserved up to 20 tickets for our group.
